Migration Issues to NetApp

First time poster, I usually just lurk, but I noticed there are 3k NetApp members on here, so I thought it might be a good idea to ask about a problem we are having.. thanks, in advance for any help!
I recently took a job with a NetApp financial customer that
  • purchased several ONTAP 9 nodes in two clusters about a year ago to replace several older devices (Windows, Solaris, Isilon and a couple of others).
  • originally thought it was about 800 million files to migrate
    • Actually.. 3.6 billion with our first two larger data sets on a 12 node Isilon farm
  • SMB/NFS: Most of the data we have is SMB, but there is some NFSv3 involved, about 20%
  • In a year+, there has not been much movement of the data from the legacy devices to the ONTAP clusters which pretty much just sit on the floor.
  • first tried some tool that NetApp PS brought in, but it failed and the guy I replaced elected to do the migration himself with other tools, spent a few months attempting to and quit (lucky me)
  • We are now using XCP.. but it's really slow.. on those two data sets i just mentioned, the sync times are taking over 60 hours on the SMB front, although the NFS syncs are faster
  • And, XCP SMB has hung a few times, but more importantly, we are seeing issues with data consistency when the copies/syncs complete. NetApp support states that you shouldn't use XCP on active data.. SERIOUSLY??
SO.. wtf do we do now??? Sorry for frustration coming through, but we are now on our 3rd or fourth migration tool and management is not happy.. and with the inconsistent data issue, they now want us to validate every file has been copied over successfully before we can turn over the data to the users!! How is this even possible if the fastest tool we've used to date takes 60 hours to sync the data? I've used a couple of comparison tools so far to test out with and they are at least 5x slower than the copy/sync..
I've hear that NetApp is coming out with a new version of SnapMirror (Cloud?) that can mirror from disparate devices and it's really quick.. is this something we should consider?
Again, thank you for any help you can provide here
**Edit 11/19**Thank you all for the replies. Have been a mad scientist for the past 24 hours and here is what I tried:
  • robocopy source destination /mir /r:0 /mt:6 /log:c:\workdir\p3.txt
    • Here I used an /mt of 6 because that was the best throughput.. anything above that, the performance numbers seemed to have gone down.. I did run two concurrent instances of this and was able to get about to get 9 threads in total between the two threads before the law of diminishing returns kicked in. Also, when I did 16 threads, got what looked like a memory error..
    • Results: 3,226,130 files copied in just about 8 hours
    • Results: 3,226,130 files synced in 2 hours & 36 minutes
    • Unfortunately, extrapolated, this would take weeks to do the sync
  • Richcopy - kept failing on invalid characters.. other times it just randomly crashed, not sure why..
  • EMcopy - about 20% faster than robocopy, just wouldn't get a sync done in time.. didn't get a full test done, but it just wasn't doing it..
  • Beyond compare: When I downloaded emcopy, someone suggested I used this.. pretty slick.. testing out comparison between source and destination, should be done soon, hoping it gives us a deliverable we can take to management
**Edit 11/20**
  • Beyond compare for validation is a bust.. doesn't actually do a validation of the files, just the permissions, plus there are different types of user groups on NetApp vs Isilon, so getting a lot of false positives, no way to strip those out..
  • I am toying around with DFS, but it looks like it would be messy and I'm not sure we can do the data move without an identity swap..
    • We don't currently use DFS
    • Would have to figure out what drive mappings people use, then create a script to change them to DFS?
    • Researching now if there is a way to use DFS for Macs
    • Scripts to search for mounts and mappings to the cluster
  • Looking at DataDobi
  • Found out cloudsync is the same thing as XCP, which is already taking us 60 hours for the sync..
