i_MiLK's Prospect Breakdown: Jacob Eason vs The Call Golden Bears
Play 1 We're going to start off extremely early here about 10 seconds into the game for the Washington Huskies. I would like to see some more urgency and pocket presence from Eason here. It's always tough when you get pressure from you blindside but he just doesn't feel the rush off the LT great on this play. I can't say I blame him a ton because he was looking at his long-developing route concept to the field side but if he sensed the rush better he had his RB on a short crossing route in acres of space underneath. The all-22 angle would give a better picture of what was going on with his first read, but something to look out for with Jacob's evaluation is how his pocket presence is like and how he deals with pressure.
Play 2 A lot has been made about how Eason isn't as athletic or mobile as many of the other QBs in this class, however I wouldn't really call him a statue in the pocket either. He's not the fastest or most explosive, but he does have enough scoot to make plays outside the pocket and pick up a good chunk of yards in open space. On this 3rd and 11 Eason shows a good ability to quickly get out into open grass and get towards line to gain. I also really like that he doesn't force a throw to the field side since the Cal defense passed off their routes well. This is some good decision making up until the end product. If you've been reading by stuff for a while then you know how much I encourage QBs to slide when they get the chance, however on this occasion I'm actually going to diverge from that philosophy for a second. On 3rd and long with the first down so close, I would actually like to see Jacob make a go to dive or run for this first down instead of sliding. I don't think this is an instance of Eason lacking toughness, but I do think that this is an instance of a lack of awareness on Jacob's part potentially thinking he already had the first down.
Play 3 This play was pretty indicative of much of his game against the Cal defense. His far slot to the field side gets wide open on a 10 yard curl, Eason delivers it on time and in rhythm, and the Huskies receiver can't hang on for an easy first down. Evan Weaver does well to knock the ball out, but his receiver should be able to show more strength and reward Jacob for making the right play. Eason's receivers let him down on numerous occasions throughout the game while Jacob didn't play a perfect game himself, he deserved a bit better and should have gotten more opportunities to extend drives and have more opportunities to score.
Play 4 And right on cue we've got a drop on a crucial 4th and 7 in Cal territory midway through the 1st quarter. Unlike the previous play though, Eason does share some of the blame for what happens on this play. Jacob puts too much mustard on this ball and puts the ball a bit high instead of directly in stride for his receiver. If Jacob puts this in stride with more touch, I have no doubt that it's an easier catch for his receiver and that his WR will be able to beat Evan Weaver in a foot race and win the corner for the first down. It also looks like Jacob has the dig route over the time, however S Jaylinn Hawkins jumps it the whole way and would have more than likely been an incomplete pass had Eason thrown it, so I'm fine with the decision he makes. This underneath throw isn't the most aggressive but with the matchups given I think it's the right one for him to take, he just needs to make a better throw.
Play 5 Well we're getting Eason's worst play of the game out of the way fairly early here. 1st and 10 from plus territory, and Washington comes out in an interesting alignment by splitting their TE Hunter Bryant out wide and isolating him to the field side of the formation against stud Golden Bears corner Camryn Bynum. Regardless of man or zone, Cal's defensive shell shows a 1-on-1 opportunity for Bryant vs Bynum and Washington goes to attack the size mismatch. Bryant gets a jump ball opportunity, but Eason doesn't even give him a chance and basically throws it straight at Camryn for the interception. Jacob isn't under any pressure but he hesitates a little and his timing is thrown off a bit. You can see the rhythm of his lower body is thrown off just a bit and I think that, in part, caused the errant throw and pick. This is one of the most maddening things about Eason, he's got the physical talent and the flashes of brilliance with his arm, but his inconsistency on some fairly easy throws and some of the turnovers he commits can be just brutal at times.
Play 6 2nd and 1 about 5 minutes into the second quarter and this is another play where Eason deserved better. I really like how patient Eason is on this play. He knows he's got ample time in the pocket, so he surveys the field quickly and works his way back to the middle of the field with his eyes after reading his pattern to the field. This is a nice ball in stride to his receiver but we see yet another drop from a Huskies WR. Regardless of the outcome I still love the process here from Jacob. This is one of the main areas I wanted to see Jacob grow as a passer. As a true freshman in 2016 at Georgia the offense was really simplified and at most he was asked to make half-field reads. As a QB at Washington, I still feel like this is could be an area of growth for him and he wasn't asked to read the field like this a ton either in Seattle. However flashes like this are encouraging and shows that there is potential for him to become a more cerebral passer in the NFL. We also see that unlike his earlier interception, his mechanics are much more smooth on this throw. Here he's got a quick release, smooth weight transfer, and a balanced base. If we can get this and the Jacob Eason who made big throws vs Oregon more consistently in the NFL then there's no doubt in my mind that he's gonna be a starting QB at the next level.
Play 7 3rd and 5 from his own 30 yard line early in the 3rd quarter and this shows another frustrating play from Jacob that should have been a conversion. I like that Eason reads the field from right to left quickly, but once he finds that dig route over the middle he's gotta get that ball out quicker. This also goes into what I mentioned earlier when I talked about how I felt he still needed to improve in terms of his processing. Cal is in what looks to be a soft Cover 2 on the snap, and because the second level defenders don't get a lot of depth on their drops, that leaves the dig route from the short slot to the field with a lot of room over the middle. Jacob gets to the route pretty quickly, however he's hesitant to let it rip and waits to throw it until FS (and one of the fastest safeties in college football) Ashtyn Davis is able to click and close on the slot receiver and make a play on the ball. Eason and UW get bailed out by a DPI call but this should have been a completion for a 1st down. I need to see Eason make anticipation throws if he wants to prove that he's a starter at the next level.
Play 8 Eason didn't have to deal with the pass rush a ton because the Huskies have a pretty good offensive line, but this was one of the few other examples of him being forced to make a play in the face of pressure. He was able to avoid the rush on a couple other plays using his legs but he didn't get the chance at any big plays from them, mainly only limiting big losses. This play however gives Eason a chance to make a play vs the rush. Jacob recognizes the 1-on-1 man to man coverage on the boundary and throws that way with the rush coming. The throw lands out of bounds though, as he's not able to step into the throw and guide the ball to his target. It's tough to really call this play a heavy negative for him. While it was an off target throw, Eason was in the process of getting sacked by multiple Cal defenders so that's just always gonna be a very tough throw to make. With that being said, Eason does have the size and arm strength to give his receiver a chance on this play. Something to keep in mind on when looking at Eason's overall resume is taking note of how accurate he is when making throws under pressure.
Play 9 THIS is what the hell I'm talking about Jacob Eason! 3rd and 17, tied at 10, ball on the +44 yard line and we get a verrrrrrrry good anticipation throw that is right on the money for the third down conversion. Once again from this angle it looks like Cal goes to their Cover 2 look and this time Eason takes advantage when he has an intermediate route coming over the middle of the field. Jacob does a great job of recognizing that the SAM LB doesn't carry his short slot receiver and that Evan Weaver doesn't have the depth in his drop to take away his window. From there, he delivers the ball just as his WR Aaron Fuller cuts in behind the SAM backer. Fuller bobbles the pass (because not even his favorite target could catch that day apparently) but eventually hauls in the pass for a big first down gain. This is exactly the type of quick processing and anticipation that I want to see Jacob play with. While this does highlight a bit of the frustration with Eason's inconsistency, I do like that, at least for this play, he's able to show the ability to learn from his mistake and come back to show immediate improvement in a pretty clutch situation. Promising stuff if you are looking for reasons to believe in Jacob Eason's upside.
Play 10 Ah, here it is. Some maddeningly inconsistent decision making. We're skipping ahead to later in the 3rd quarter, going to a 2nd and goal on Cal's 4 yard line. Washington comes out with play action from I-formation and from Eason's decision it looks like his first read is to his FB out of the flat to the field side. Eason goes for the throw and is extremely fortunate that this isn't a pick-6 going the other way. Why he decides to throw this ball to his FB I have no idea, especially a touch pass with the corner rapidly closing downhill. Eason never even saw the CB on this throw though, and I imagine that's why he though he could get away with this throw. Disregarding the corner, Eason is still expecting his FB of all people to win in a jump-ball situation. I just fail to see how this decision was supposed to result in a TD for the Huskies. If this was his first read then part of the blame should go to the play caller for even trying this, but a lot of the blame also goes to Jacob for thinking this throw was the right play to make. This is the red zone, you have to prioritize ball security as a QB down there. This is just too dangerous a throw to attempt and it really rubs me the wrong way that he put the ball in such a precarious position.
Play 11 This is a pretty interesting play by Eason that highlights some nice stuff from Jacob but also some concerning stuff. The nice stuff is Eason's creativity to buy time for his receivers to get open. On the ensuing 3rd and goal here after play #10, the Huskies go to a slants concept with an isolated slant to the boundary-side of the field and a pair of slants from the slot receiver and outside receiver to the field-side of the formation. Cal plays a condensed Cover 3 in the end zone and it takes away all the initial options in the pattern for Eason. Jacob does a good job of not forcing anything and then eventually finding his slot receiver coming across his face open in the end zone and giving him a chance to make a toe-tap catch for a TD. Unfortunately the throw carries the receiver juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit outside and the pass is incomplete. What I mainly like is that Jacob is able to use his legs and his mobility to make a play outside the pocket, give his receiver enough time to get open, and create a potential scoring chance for his team. Like I said early on, Eason isn't really known for his mobility but he is a pretty good athlete and he has the potential to make plays with his legs when he absolutely needs to. Now to what I don't like. I'm just really not sure about the pocket presence on this one. I know #55 gets free eventually but by the time that happens Eason is already turning his back to his receivers in a bid to run outside the pocket. He's got more than enough time to hang in there wait for his receivers to get open and still escape the pocket if he needs to. If he doesn't bail early he probably gets a chance for a better throw where the receiver isn't basically already out of bounds by the time the ball reaches him and it's probably a Washington TD. Eason's lack of great feel in the pocket is really starting to worry me, especially if he goes to a team with a poor OL that will mess up his internal clock even more.
Play 12 We're gonna wrap this up soon so let's skip ahead towards the end of the 4th quarter. 2nd and 8 with just about 4 minutes left in the game at around midfield with the score 17-16 and Cal in front. The Huskies are driving, ranked in the top 15, and playing at home. This is the moment to make something big happen, lead your team to a go-ahead score, and win this football game. Eason gets a GOLDEN opportunity to hit a huge play and put Cal on the back foot with a TD on a 9 route to his main man Aaron Fuller. Fuller does well to beat Bynum off the snap and get a step with his release, and Jacob even has plenty of time and room to step into this throw because Washington played max protection and kept in 7 blockers. Eason let's it rip aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… it lands 3 yards in front of Fuller for an incompletion. Pretty rough timing to have a miss on a chance like that eh? I'm not really sure why Eason double clutches before he lets the ball rip though. Hawkins just isn't fast enough to cover the ground he'd need to, he was never going to get to that ball in time. Other than that I'm really not sure why Jacob misses this throw, it's set up for him right on a platter. Obviously a QB's never going to bat 1.000 on deep balls but we've seen Jacob drop some crazy deep throws in the bucket before, it just wasn't to be on this occasion. It is tough, because in such a clutch situation I'd really like to see him hit this throw for the potential game-winner.
Play 13 So we're on to the play directly after play #12 and this turns out to be a quality bounce-back play from Jacob Eason on a critical 3rd and 8 down 1. The Golden Bears defense isn't hiding what their intent is at all, they've got a single-high safety back deep to protect against the homerun ball but they're playing man to man across the board and sending everyone else after Jacob. This is a really clutch throw that Eason has to make here. For starters, he needs to get the ball out extremely quickly. Washington sends 4 receivers out and therefore can only keep in 6 to protect. Cal smartly rushes 5 defenders against 4 UW OL to Eason's right, meaning that a free rusher is barreling in to lay a lick on Jacob is he gets the chance. The other reason the ball needs to be out as soon as possible is because the slot DB is jumping the slant route and making a beeline to his slot receiver to pick-6 this thing and ice the game. Not only does Jacob fire an absolute heater that beats the rush and the DB, but he also displays excellent ball placement to put the ball away from the slot corner's body. Eason's receiver was the only one who'd ever catch that ball and it's in stride enough for the receiver to fight out the extra yard and a half necessary to pick up the first down and keep the drive moving into Cal territory. This is what's so simultaneously exciting and frustrating about Jacob Eason. He can improve on mistakes in an instant and really make you believe that he can be the guy for a team, but when he's playing poorly you just start thinking to yourself "Wtf? What's happened there Eason?" I genuinely don't know what QB we'll get in the pros but that's the fun part about the draft, ya never know who's gonna fulfill their potential.
Play 14 Last play of the breakdown here with Washington still driving on Cal's 32 yard line on a 3rd and 11 with 2:14 left to play in the game. This just about sums up much of Eason's experience against Cal and how frustrating Washington's overall offensive performance was against Cal. Eason is forced to get the ball out quickly due to Cal sending 7 guys at him, and he finds Aaron Fuller in stride 4 yards shy of the marker with 1 man to beat for the first down. Of course, Fuller drops the ball, gets wrapped up by Jaylinn Hawkins, and the Huskies stall out and are forced to kick a field goal. From there, Cal would quickly get a field goal of their own to go back up 20-19 and would see the game out from there. Nothing really seemed to click for every part of the Washington passing attack, and at least 1 part of their passing game was just out of synch with everyone else and it just overall made for a wasted opportunity in a winnable game to set the tone for the rest of their season in an early Pac-12 North matchup.
This game really highlights what some of my overall thoughts on Jacob Eason are. He's obviously got the physical tools of a starter in the NFL, and while he's not an amazing athlete he's certainly got a bit of mobility to him. It just seems like everything else is extremely hit or miss with him. The touch comes and goes, the ball placement comes and goes, the decision making comes and goes, the anticipation comes and goes etc. There are certainly some worrying things. He had some rough misses and I really don't think Cal threw him a ton of curveballs. It seemed like Cal stuck to their MO on defense, good amount of Cover 3 & 6 with some Cover 2 and a sprinkle of man in there with not a ton of blitzing because their DBs are so good. On top of his inconsistency in general, the pocket awareness is concerning for me in a pretty big way. That's not something easily fixed and like I said earlier in the breakdown, if he goes to a team with a bad OL it's likely to only get worse and worse. I am optimistic though, because of his ability to bounce back from mistakes in this game and learn from what he missed and make those misses makes when given the opportunity. As a young QB, mistakes are inevitable but being able to learn and grow from them is vital in surviving in the NFL. I was most impressed with his 3rd and 8 conversion late in the game with about 4 minutes left. That throw isn't as easy as it may seem, especially coming off of such a disappointing miss with that shot play on 2nd and 8 that would have been a TD. That kind of mental toughness is crucial for a QB to have at the next level. What do you think of Jacob Eason and his game against the Cal Golden Bears? Who else would you like me to cover in a future prospect breakdown? Let me know in the comments, thanks!
