The Doom Slayer - An Analysis And Explanation On The Doom Marine's New Backstory

Hello, everyone. I recently completed the new Doom and was extremely interested in the new backstory they gave to our protagonist in this installment. However, it seems that id's method of vague storytelling, as much as I personally loved it, confused a lot of users as to what, exactly, it was trying to convey. There are tons of theories that this game is technically a prequel, or a sequel, or a complete reboot of the franchise, and I have decided to write up an analysis clearing up the confusion.
Fair warning, this is a lot of text. Still, I tried to break down every bit of backstory they gave us on the Doom Slayer.
To start, we're going to have to go to the very beginning.

The Story of the Doom Slayer

Argent D'Nur and the Night Sentinels

From the 'The Wraiths' first data log:
While there have been no confirmed sightings of these creatures, much is known about them as they are revered by the demons and referenced multiple times in all explored areas of Hell. According to scriptures found in Kadingir Sanctum, the Wraiths are elemental beings that inhabit the realm of Argent D'Nur, a world that was colonized in the First Age of Ascension. The Wraiths were deified by the people of Argent D'Nur and protected by their fiercest warriors, the Night Sentinels. They are believed to have been imbued with powerful energy.
This is perhaps the best description we get of the world of Argent D'Nur. From it, we gather that it was some sort of "realm" or "world", suggesting that it is not a planet or a part of the known world, but something perhaps from outside of the known dimension. Here, we learn of the Night Sentinels, powerful agents of Argent D'Nur who were given the duty of protecting the Wraiths, mystical beings who were deified by the people of the realm. The last sentence suggests that the Night Sentinels were granted some sort of power from the Wraiths, which may suggest why our protagonist is so powerful - we'll get to him a little later, though.
The second entry is not really important, despite being fairly interesting, so we'll move on to the third:
Further reading from the Ungmar Codex:
"The Night Sentinels stood strong against our legions. Conquest at Argent D'Nur, empowered by the Wraith energy, was foiled at every turn. Yet in our darkest hour came a lowly Hell priest, Deag Grav, and in his guidance a weakness in a heathen of the Night Sentinels was found.
The bargain was struck thus: for the return of the Betrayer's only son, lost on the battlefield, Deag Grav must be taken to the source of their power, The Elemental Wraiths. Lead their by the wretched Betrayer, Deag Grav and his cabal set a curse upon the wraiths as they slept, and used their essence for our own devices. With the power of the Wraiths they formed The Well, that which brings us upon our enemies. Thus, the city of Argent and their false gods fell under the unholy might of the Hell priests.
For his payment, the Betrayer's son was returned to him in our form, and the Icon of Sin was brought upon the heathens. His vengeance was swift and merciless, for the wages of treachery are suffering.
With the fall of Argent D'Nur, their realm was taken into ours, their temples and runes, their carved rock and edifice, all was absorbed into our realm and taken as trophies of our triumph."
This is quite a lengthy one. It suggests that the Night Sentinels and the demons were at war for quite some time, and ultimately the demons won by striking a bargain with one of the Night Sentinels. They were lead to the Wraiths, the source of the Night Sentinels power, in exchange for the return of the Sentinel's dead son. The demons put the Wraiths to sleep and used their power for their own devices, forming the Well that allows the demons to travel between worlds. The son was reborn as some form of demon. Some theorize he became the Icon of Sin, but it is likely, based on the sentence structure, that the son was turned into a different demon and the Icon of Sin is a separate entity, sent to lay waste to the people of Argent D'Nur. Then, the world was absorbed by Hell.
Interestingly, this battle leads to Hell gaining the Well, which is explained as their method for travelling between worlds. This suggests that before these events, they did not have a way to do so, implying that Argent D'Nur and Hell must have been connected in some way before the fall of the realm.
It should be noted that the Icon of Sin is the final boss of DOOM II. For full disclosure, I should mention that there is an easter egg where the player can find the Icon of Sin's head on a wall in the Necropolis, with its brain exposed, even. It plays some classic DOOM II sound effects when you shoot its weak point, which leads to the belief that it is just a fun little easter egg, but the message intended could be that the Icon of Sin has already been killed.
Section tl;dr: Argent D'Nur was an ancient realm with powerful Wraiths guarded by knights known as the Night Sentinels who were imbued with energy. The demons were at war with this realm until a traitor to the Night Sentinels allowed the demons to corrupt the Wraiths, creating the Well that allows them to travel between worlds. The demons then promptly turned the traitor's son into a demon and summoned the Icon of Sin, who killed a lot of people.

The Doom Slayer

From Slayer's Testament: I;
In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer.
The explanation here is pretty simple: likely after the defeat of his men and destruction of his world, the "leader" or "king" (as suggested by the "crown" described in the text) of the Night Sentinels sought vengeance over the armies of Hell, slaying demons using a sword and becoming "blistered" and "tainted". Clearly, he had some success at this, considering he earned the title of "Doom Slayer". It is heavily implied that this character is our protagonist. It is suggested he was the last standing of some sort of "first battle", and the earliest known battle is the fall of Argent D'Nur, which adds up quite well with our previous descriptions. From this, it seems likely that the Doom Slayer was leading the Night Sentinels in this battle, and ended up being the last one standing at the end. The first battle could be something different entirely, however, as the sentence is quite vague.
From Slayer's Testament: II;
Tempered by the fires of Hell, his iron will remained steadfast through the passage that preys upon the weak. For he alone was the Hell Walker, the Unchained Predator, who sought retribution in all quarters, dark and light, fire and ice, in the beginning and the end, and he hunted the slaves of Doom with barbarous cruelty; for he passed through the divide as none but demon had before.
Another description telling us how badass the Doom Slayer is, but the interesting thing to note is that it describes him as being able to pass through the "divide" as "none but demon had before". This can be interpreted in a few ways, but primarily suggests that no one, save for demons, crossed over in quite the way he did. Perhaps this just means nobody crossed over and lived, or that nobody else had crossed over at all.
From Slayer's Testament: III;
And in his conquest against the blackened souls of the doomed, his prowess was shown. In his crusade, the seraphim bestowed upon him terrible power and speed, and with his might he crushed the obsidian pillars of the Blood Temples. He set forth without pity upon the beasts of the nine circles. Unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding, the Doom Slayer sought to end the dominion of the dark realm.
More badassery, but the main interesting tidbit is that he was bestowed "terrible power and speed" by a seraphim. This could be intended to be taken literally, suggesting that the Slayer was in fact blessed by an angel, but it could also be meant to be figurative, implying that our Doom Slayer is just so powerful that it seems as though he must be blessed.
From Slayer's Testament: IV;
The age of his reckoning was uncounted. The scribes carved his name deep in the tablets of Hell across eons, and each battle etched terror in the hearts of the demons. They knew he would come, as he always had, as he always will, to feast on the blood of the wicked. For he alone could draw strength from his fallen foes, and ever his power grew, swift and unrelenting.
They really hammer home how badass he is. Interesting note here: he "feasts" on "the blood of the wicked" and draws "strength from his fallen foes" - this may be a reference to our health rewards on executing a glory kill.
Slayer's Testament: V;
None could stand before the horde but the Doom Slayer. Despair spread before him like a plague, striking fear into the shadow-dwellers, driving them to deeper and darker pits. But from the depths of the abyss rose The Great One, a champion mightier than all who had come before. The Titan, of immeasurable power and ferocity. He strode upon the plain and faced the Doom Slayer, and a mighty battle was fought on the desolate plains. The Titan fought with the fury of the countless that had fallen at the Doom Slayer's hand, but there fell the Titan, and in his defeat the shadow horde were routed.
Here we are introduced to a new demon, "The Great One" or "the Titan". We never meet this demon over the course of the game, and it seems to only exist in these scriptures to show even more reason for the Doom Slayer to be feared. Some people theorize that the giant skull at the beginning of the "Titan's Realm" mission is in fact the Titan's skull, though other than its ferocious size there is nothing in the game that serves as evidence toward this.
There is also the possibility that this "Titan" is in fact the Icon of Sin. The only evidence supporting this is the demon's size, so it is highly likely this was not the writers' intent, especially considering they put great effort into stating that the area this fight occurred was in "desolate plains", an area absolutely nothing like the area he is fought in DOOM II.
And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time, the Hell Walker found the wretch who shall not be named, but in his heresy was loyal to his evil cause. The wretch adorned the Doom Slayer in a mighty armor, wrought in the forges of Hell, impenetrable and unyielding. With sword and shield of adamantine strength, the Doom Slayer set to banishing all that were left unbroken by his savagery to the void.
In this testament, we are introduced to "the wretch". While it does not outright say the wretch is a demon, the use of the word "heresy" implies that his helping the Doom Slayer is outside of the orthodox actions of his people, heavily implying that he was a part of the Slayer's enemies - the demons. The wretch gives the Doom Slayer a new set of armor, and perhaps a new sword and shield (although it is not outright said if these are new or not).
An interesting note - we learn at the game's end that the Crucible is, in fact, a sword. It appears demonic in origin, and has an Argent energy blade. Samuel Hayden also seems to believe the Crucible will respond better to our protagonist, as the UAC has had no success with it, perhaps implying that the blade once belonged to the protagonist. This may mean that the blade in this Testament was, in fact, a new blade, perhaps the Crucible itself, meaning the Crucible is the Doom Slayer's sword. This is speculative, however.
Slayer's Testament: VII;
Yet as the mighty Titan fell and dread engulfed the armies of Doom, the demon priests of the Blood Temples laid a trap to capture this scourge of Hell. Insatiable, even by the vanquishing of the Great One, the Hell Walker sought prey in the tombs of the Blood Keep. And blinded by his fervor, the lure drew him in. The priests brought down the temple upon the Doom Slayer, and in his defeat entombed him in the cursed sarcophagus. The mark of the Doom Slayer was burned upon his crypt, a warning to all of Hell that the terror within must never be freed. There he lies still, and ever more, in silent suffering.
And so, the Doom Slayer is finally trapped inside a sarcophagus inside of a temple, with "his mark" burned upon his crypt. This leads us to our next section...
Section tl;dr: The leader of the Night Sentinels was a badass who killed a ton of them with swords, including a colossal "Titan". He was given some sick armor by a "wretch", and possibly also a sword and shield. Eventually, the demons managed to trap him in a tomb bearing his mark.

The Doom Marine

From "Doom Marine" entry two:
Without doubt, the UAC's most remarkable recent discovery was uncovered in its expedition to Hell's Kadingir Sanctum. After several kilometers through nearly impassible terrain, the team discovered a sealed tomb - its entrance and walls covered in protective runes and imprisonment incantations. Once opened, the tomb revealed many artifacts including the Praetor suit. Most notable, however, was an enormous sarcophagus bound to the center bedrock of the tomb with thick iron bands - seemingly anchored to prevent anything from getting in or out.
It was initially believed this sarcophagus must hold a rare or powerful demon, but when later opened, it revealed the body of a man. The body was not petrified or decomposed - in fact, he appeared to be only sleeping despite the fact that the bed he lay in seemed millennia old. Attempts to wake the man were fruitless - and to harm him even more so - as a protective Argent barrier around the body kept him safe from harm in permanent stasis.
UAC archivists cataloged the discovery DM1-5, but project personnel soon dubbed him the "DOOM Marine". While the history of this man remains conjecture, the Helix Stone, as well as other artifacts found at the Argent Fracture and during the Hell Expedition of ECm13 have shed some light on his identity. An etching in the book of Daeva, depicts the Doom Marine wearing the Praetor suit, engaging demons in battle as a hooded figure looks on. This image had been previously observed numerous times in other artifacts, but only with the actual discovery of the DOOM Marine and Praetor suit in the sealed Kadingir tomb have researchers begun to put other pieces together. It is now believed the DOOM Marine might have been part of an ancient group or tribe, maybe even their leader. Whether he is god, demon or human will remain undetermined until the Argent barrier protecting his body can be deactivated. Further deepening the mystery of his origin, UAC remote monitoring drones in service during the Kadingir Expedition recorded a protracted and deadly battle during the sarcophagus extraction -- the demons attempting to defend the tomb with an instinctual ferocity previously unobserved.
Once tethered and returned to the UAC, the sarcophagus was studied and first opened at the Lazarus Labs, but went missing a few weeks later. It was believed that Samuel Hayden had the body and Praetor suit moved and hidden to keep it secure, although why he considered it to be under threat is not known.
Of final note; to date, the DOOM Marine and Samuel Hayden are the only known non-demon entities to successfully cross over from the Hell dimension to our own, despite several attempts by other UAC human personnel to do the same.
Wow, this one is a doozy. It effectively confirms that the Doom Slayer described in the Slayer's Testaments is the protagonist, and goes on to suggest that the Doom Slayer is likely an ancient being. It also leads to the belief that the armor constructed for the Doom Slayer in the Testament's is the Praetor suit we wear in the game.
The most mysterious part of this is the hooded figure. Outside of this image, such a figure is never mentioned. It seems to be glowing, perhaps with a holy light, which could lead one to believe it is the seraphim described in the Testaments. It could also be another character, such as the wretch, but there is really nothing to push that idea. Of note also, the image shows Night Sentinels fighting along with the Doom Slayer, further proving he was involved with them.
A note about the armor depicted in the etching: many people have stated that it looks like the Doom Marine's suit from the original games. However, the armor itself appears much more like the Praetor suit we see in this game, and only the helmet bears any real resemblance to the original. This is particularly noticeable in that the armor has sleeves, which the original DOOM suit does not. The helmet itself looks almost like a cross between the original and the Praetor suit's, leading me to believe this art was based on an early design of our new protagonist or is simply off-model.
Section tl;dr: The Doom Slayer and our protagonist are one and the same. The Doom Slayer was found by the UAC in his tomb and taken back with them, where he remains until we wake up as him at the game's intro.

The Praetor Suit

From "Doom Marine", Entry Two:
Additional relics were found in the tomb alongside the Doom Marine. Some incantation tablets, and an ancient combat suit which was given a name: the 'Praetor Suit'. When found, it was encased in an inscribed stone tomb. The suit was extracted from the rock, cleaned, and subjected to numerous tolerance tests, and found to be almost impervious to any damage. It appeared to have some mechanical function as well - small receptors on the gloves and chest plate that attracted Argent plasma and dissipated it through capillary tubes in the substructure. Markings on the armor were also consistent with images of a man (or humanoid) seen in several of the tablets and stones found on other expeditions. The same markings were also noted on the Helix Stone.
Despite it being clear that the suit can be activated in some way, no method has been found to do it. It appears to be missing a component, likely the Doom Marine himself.
The Praetor suit's description is extremely consistent with the descriptions of the Doom Slayer's armor found in the Slayer's Testaments. It also has technological aspects to it, as we can both see and is described to us, suggesting that either the wretch, the Night Sentinels, or both were technologically advanced in some way. Perhaps "ancient" is a very relative term. It should also be noted that the mark described above is shared with the Night Sentinel ghosts that you see toward the game's end, further hammering home that our Doom Marine was associated with them.
Section tl;dr: The Doom Slayer's armor is the Praetor suit, which bears the same markings as the Night Sentinels. It seems pretty advanced, suggesting that the Night Sentinels, the wretch, or both were actually quite technologically advanced.

From all of this evidence, I think its safe to say that our protagonist is in fact the Doom Slayer described in the Testaments. He lead the Night Sentinels against the demons, but when Argent D'Nur fell, he sought revenge, tearing the demons to pieces. Along the way he got some sweet armor and maybe the Crucible, but then the demons locked him up because he freaked them out. And so our game starts, with us controlling the Doom Slayer and killing tons of demons.
But wait, are you not convinced? You still think that the Doom Slayer could be the Marine from the old games?

Other Theories People Have

The game is a prequel. The Doom Marine did all of his achievements in this game, and afterward the other Doom games happen.

This theory holds no water, as the events of this game simply don't align with the others. In DOOM, the protagonist is simply a regular UAC Marine, and the plot goes very similarly to this game. This game implies that there is only one Cyberdemon, and we witness the birth and death of the Spider Mastermind right before our eyes, meaning that this game could not take place before the others. You could say the Doom Slayer's mind was wiped and he started working with the UAC and that history repeated itself, with them creating another Cyberdemon, but we actually witness birth of the Spider Mastermind in this game as a fusion of a unique demon and Olivia, its mechanical parts being from her exoskeleton, whereas in the original game the Spider Masterminds were created in Hell. These are two completely different origins that somehow result in the same monster, and as such do not make sense to occur in the same universe.
Addendum: -xTc- :
It can't be a prequel, because UAC had already mastered teleport tech in Doom2016(see the teleporters in Lazarus Labs for example, or Sam Hayden teleporting Doomguy from back Hell) where in the original they were just experimenting with them, and opened a portal to Hell and teleported Deimos to Hell. Also, in Doom2016 they knew exactly what Hell is and the horrors/power it contains, where in the originals Hell and it's demons are a previously unknown phenomenon until they invade.

The game is a sequel. The other Doom games happen before this one.

This idea requires you to completely ignore the fact that the Doom Slayer is our protagonist, unless you believe that the other games happened thousands of years before this one. Even if that were the case, and our Doom Slayer was originally a marine who found himself helping the Night Sentinels in Hell before returning to Mars at the beginning of this game, the theory still doesn't work. There are too many inconsistencies. For instance, the Revenant, Cyber-Mancubus, and Cyber Demon are all said to be created by the UAC, whereas in the original Doom they were born in Hell. These simply cannot coexist, and there is plenty of other evidence stacked against the idea. On top of this, as stated earlier, we actually witness birth of the Spider Mastermind in this game as a fusion of a unique demon and Olivia, its mechanical parts being from her exoskeleton, whereas in the original game the Spider Masterminds were created in Hell. These are two completely different origins that somehow result in the same monster, and as such do not make sense to occur in the same universe.
Addendum: -xTc- :
It can't be a sequel, as UAC is seen as a relatively new thing/corporation; Argent Energy is shown as solving humanity's energy crisis, and there is no mention anywhere about a demonic invasion of earth or the disasters of Phobos or Deimos(or Mars, if you want to include Doom 3). Also, after nearly going extinct form demonic invasion, why the fuck would you keep messing around with Hell???
Additionally, even ignoring these inconsistencies, there is no evidence to support such an idea. The only things that may lead credence to the theory are that the Doom Marine seems to understand English, can wield guns, and that the Icon of Sin easter egg may be suggesting he is already dead. The first two can be easily explained as developer oversight or as a simple handwave, and even failing that they do not suggest our hero is the old Doom Marine, only that the people of his dimension may have understood English and wielded guns. The last one also doesn't really say anything - it could simply be that the Icon of Sin has already been defeated in this rebooted universe, which seems likely considering all of the other inconsistencies listed above. Additionally, it could simply be an easter egg, particularly considering the clearly referential sounds it plays when shot.

The game is a sequel. The Doom Marine from the originals traveled between dimensions and ended up in this alternate reality and wants to stop it from following the same path as his.

Theoretically, this could be correct. The Testaments do say he incited terrible rancor "between worlds" and "through time". However, there is no evidence to actually support the idea, only the possibility that it could have happened. It is much more likely that the line in question was just referring to him travelling between parts of hell (worlds) and killing demons for centuries (time).
All in all, most of the ideas theories connecting the games are wishful thinking. No evidence really supports these theories, only lends to the possibility that they could maybe possibly happen in this rebooted universe. This is not evidence for them, though, and thus it is not really logical to consider them the truth of the game's lore. That said, nobody can force an opinion on another, and anyone can choose to believe whatever they want - even if their ideas have no real evidence backing them up.
3 Section tl;dr: Other theories don't hold much water, either due to lack of evidence or contradictions in this game's lore. Likely, it is a fresh reboot of the story, and attempts to connect it to the old games are just wishful thinking for those who want it.

The End

If you actually read all of this, I thank you and am truly impressed! I enjoyed writing it and I am completely open to hearing people's thoughts on the subject, even if they don't entirely agree, as long as they are civil about it.
My personal thoughts: the lore in this game is amazing, and it had me really interested, something I was not at all expecting going into the game. I just saw a lot of confusion and felt the need to make this write up. Thanks for reading!
EDIT: I have gone through and adjusted this post after reading everyone's comments. I fleshed a few things out more and, after seeing everyone's interpretations, changed some of my interpretations. Thanks again for reading.
