100 shooters played, 100 shooters ranked. Here's my list.

Today I couldn't be arsed to do chores around the house, so I decided to rank all of the shooters I've played over the years. Don't know why, maybe it's because lately I've been catching up on some old-school fps and I was in the mood of doing a retrospective of some sort. Anyway, this is what I came up with and I'm eager to share it with you and find out about your own personal rankings, should you decide to share them as well.
Some notes regarding this list:
  1. all games are ranked in terms of how much I enjoyed them and how fondly I remember playing them, there's no objectivity or deep analysis of gameplay, replayability, or whatnot, this is just my subjective opinion on them;
  2. I only included games that I have played long enough of to be sure of my scoring (rounded to the nearest half);
  3. only games that I personally consider shooters made the list, meaning that in the case of genre-hybrids I included only those that I consider to belong for the most part into the shooter genre (hence why, for example, Borderlands and Bioshock are included, but Fallout: New Vegas and Superhot aren't), so be aware that personal bias is at play here;
  4. if a game isn't on the list, it means either I didn't play it, it didn't satisfy criteria 2 and 3, or I just plainly forgot about it;
  5. for the reasons above I'm still unsure if I did the right thing including tactical shooters, considering how strategic they are compared to the rest, and if I should've excluded multiplayer only games considering I favor the singleplayer 99% of the time;
  6. if you wondered whether I might've inflated the list just to get to a round 100, the answer is... kind of(?)... I included multiplayer games and standalone expansions in order to get a round number, but I assure you that I have indeed played them all for a sufficient amount of time for me to formulate an opinion on whether I like them or not;
  7. I'm aware that some of my scoring might raise a few highbrows, especially in regards of beloved classics that don't figure at the top of the list...

A few more words on some prominent titles.

Doom and other id Software games

Doom is the title that I personally consider the most influential in making me a 'gamer'. At the time of release I was just a kid and in our house we had a 386 pc which I was only allowed to play on under strict supervision (it was my dad's after all). The only games we had were Tetris, and Prince Of Persia, and buying a new game was out of the question. So when I got my hands on the shareware version of Doom, I played the sh-t out of it. Years later I eventually got around of playing the whole game and I haven't stopped since.
Yes, Doom II didn't bring much new compared to the first one, although I'd argue the new enemies and super shotgun were still an awesome addition, but it's still among the best and the 2016 reboot is damn fun to replay once a year despite adopting the arena formula instead of the traditional open ended maps. I consider the series as the gold standard for old school fps even today, despite a few missteps along the way.
Quake (along with Unreal) shepherd the genre in the third dimension and its coding can still be found in many game engines of today. Wolfenstein is probably the franchise that went through the most varied iterations, some more successful than others and I personally had some grievances regarding the recent ones. And the least is said about Rage the better...

Blood and the Build Engine games

Blood might just be the only game able to give Doom a run for its money with it's crazy weapons, gore and excellent level design. It's one of my most recently played games too, as I only got my hands on it because of the remaster, a testament of how well it holds up. Also, it's bloody hard! Mostly because of the cultists (s)hitscanners, but still a good challenge even for experienced players.
Somehow, the rest of the Build Engine games didn't have as much of an impact on me: Shadow Warrior for example, I liked playing it a lot, but didn't stick with me as much. I'm looking forward to play Ion Fury, however, and see how it stacks up with its cousins.

The immersive experience

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Metro and F.E.A.R., if you want a survival horror infused shooter experience, look no further than these gems. Albeit quite different from one another, the first being open-ended almost sandbox-like, the others more linear and story driven, they all succeeded at creating an atmosphere of tension and danger, despite the player character being armed to the teeth.
Also, the Bioshock games: immersive and atmospheric, these games set themselves apart in creating worlds that are detailed and permeating with narrative. I wasn't as sold on the narrative of Infinite though, it felt a tad predictable, and Columbia didn't capture my imagination like Rapture did.

Narrative focused shooters

Despite my love for the old school formula, a number of more linear and narrative driven games have captured my attention, like the already mentioned Metro and F.E.A.R., and I would be remiss if I didn't mentioned a few of the more prominent ones.
Like Half-Life, for example. Arguably the game that started the narrative trend in shooters, its merits are undeniable: the gameplay is tight, the narrative solid, the environments memorable and its main character is still one of the most recognizable in videogames. But I have to admit that as much as I liked it, it didn't quite hit me as deeply as its fanbase and cannot see myself as invested in its cult status. A similar affair in regards of Halo, another cult classic that I seemingly did not enjoy nearly as much as the fans did.
On the contrary, Max Payne is an important one for me. The first time I got 'hyped' about a game was when I found out about it on a gaming magazine. The first rendition of the Matrix-like bullet time action genre and a great noire story to complement it. Lightning didn't struck twice however, at least for me, the second game was good, but not as memorable, and the third was a dull and repetitive affair compared to the others.
But the one that I hold in the highest of regards is Spec Ops: The Line. A controversial take to some, but the impact of the story was shocking and its subtext hit me hard. The gameplay is quite average (some might say on purpose, but I'm not sure I agree) and progression repetitive, but it serves the narrative and its message well. These days it may very well be overpraised by many, but to me it holds a special place among my favourite stories in videogames.

Going tactical

Not much of these games remain today, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon have been (imho) butchered by the corporate overlords at Ubisoft in the name of live service moneymaking. But years ago, these franchises occupied a sweet spot between the hardcore military simulation and standard shooters. The first Ghost Recon was at the time a highly anticipated game for me, and did not disappoint once it came out. SWAT 3 and 4 are an oddity in this list, in the sense that technically speaking the ideal outcome of each mission is the one where no shots are fired.
I miss these type of games, however I must admit that I don't have the patience anymore for that kind of slow paced gameplay and punishing difficulty, so the memory is all that remains.
Anyway, I've been rambling on incoherently for quite a while. I would love to read some of your opinions on these games and your own personal lists. What subgenre of shooters do you enjoy the most? Do you prefer realism or bombastic action? Linear or non-linear? Narrative, yes or no? Feel free to share.
Edit: thanks everyone for all your comments, I'm doing my best to reply to everybody.
