Character Balance Notes for April 6th
- Sometimes Captain Squawk character stickers show up without his name, not anymore
- Fixed endless Toxic Overload issue for Toxic Brainz ensuring it always times out as designed
- Addressed performance issues around too many Party Imps appearing in the same session
- Prevent game from crashing due to two specific customizations (Druid-Robo’k hat & Derby Dillo)
- Ensured proper difficulty level for the Red Gnome in the “Brothers Gnomus” Boss Hunt
- Increased rate of fire from 150 to 200
- Increased ammo capacity from 10 to 12 Dev Notes: Scallywag has been slightly underperforming compared to his fellow Imps. An increase in rate of fire will help him hit targets more consistently. However, this will also cause his ammo to deplete more quickly, so we’ve increased his ammo capacity to help compensate. These changes will also bring up his damage per second and per clip, giving him that extra edge that a legendary character should have.
- Doubled the speed at which his rate of fire increases for both his ranged and melee attacks Dev Notes: His slow ramp up in rate of fire made it difficult for him to secure vanquishes in a fight, often getting vanquished before reaching maximum damage output. We’ve increased the speed at which his rate of fire increases to help him put up more of a fighting chance when combat is initiated.
- Charged Shot First Level o Decreased splash damage from 30 to 25 (also affects impact damage) o Decreased inner splash radius from 3 to 2 o Decreased splash radius 4 to 3
- Charged Shot Second Level o Decreased splash damage from 45 to 40 (also affects impact damage) o Decreased inner splash radius from 3.5 to 2.5 o Decreased splash radius from 5 to 4
- Decreased movement speed while priming/firing by 25% Dev Notes: His fast movement speed while priming or firing his weapon is what makes Tennis Star unique. However, it needs to be dialed down slightly as priming is one of the weaknesses of the Allstar class. He will still be the fastest Allstar both when moving and when priming/firing.
- Husk Hop: Decreased inner splash radius from 2.5 to 2.25 Dev Notes: Husk Hop can be very difficult to avoid due to its large splash damage radius. We want Zombies to feel like they can avoid getting vanquished by this ability if they see it coming without making Corn players feel like they’ve wasted their Husk Hop. This change causes damage to start to falloff near the outside of the splash damage radius. Zombies who manage to side step the attack will still receive damage, but it is less likely to vanquish them due to the decreased damage near the edge of the explosion.
- Decreased detonation damage from 30 to 27
- Decreased detonation radius from 4 to 3.5
- Decreased regular splash damage from 18 to 16 Captain Cannon
- Decreased detonation damage from 35 to 32
- Decreased detonation inner damage radius from 4 to 3 Dev Notes: The most recent buffs to Electro Peashooter and Captain Cannon made them a little too powerful. These changes dial them back a bit and make it a little more difficult to secure those detonation vanquishes.
Netbook setup info
So, if you have an old netbook, or just an old computer in general, and want Linux on it, I hope this will help you at least a little bit in getting the most out of it.
As I am sure you already guessed, using a lightweight distro would be best. There are a few choices here, depending on how new a user you are to linux.
[New users to Linux]
If you are a new user with a newerish netbook, I would recommend Ubuntu Mate. This is based on Ubuntu, so you get great compatibility, with the Mate desktop. This comes with alot of cool features, such as the ability to change the look to be Unity like, gnome2 like, windows like, etc. This is also the same distro that is the default on the Raspberry Pi 2. It is relatively fast on lower end system, and a pretty good user experience.
If you are a new user with an old netbook that was running WinXP, and want to go to a system that won't be destroyed by virus, I would go for Lubuntu. Again, an Ubuntu base but this time with the LXDE desktop. It is, in my experience, the fastest "full" desktop, as well as being easier to lower even further due to all it's parts being drop in stuff, you can remove anything really. If you don't need the taskbar, you can remove it and just use Openbox's menu. This isn't the easiest as LXDE doesn't really have a gui for this stuff, but it is doable. In general, it is a really simple system to use coming from Windows, and can also be made to look like Unity, gnome2, etc, however this has to be done "by hand" where as Mate has a little GUI menu to do it. This Distro is great if you want to most speed out of your system, while not wanting to delve to the CLI.
[Advanced / Keen new users]
If you are an advanced user, or just keen to learn, I would go Arch Linux. There are 2 ways to go, imo, either stock Arch or Antergos. Antergos isn't as good a way to do it as stuck, you don't have as much fine control, but it is a great launching off point. If you do go Antergos, I would suggest you just do the base install, aka no DE. I won't go into installing arch, the Beginners Guide does a great job. You could also go Gentoo, which "might" be faster, however the time needed to get up and running on a netbook would be crushing :).
If you go this route, we can move on to the actual DE part. As an advanced user, you have plenty of choices. You can go pure window manager. This includes tiling managers like AwesomeWM and Xmonad which are nice low end WM's that tile your windows, aka you can just drag them around, they take up quadrants. You also have floating window managers like Openbox and PekWM. These are low end ones that let you drag your windows anywhere, place them on top of others, etc. If you want a "normal desktop" you have a few choices too. On the very low end you have things like IceWM and Rox are very low end, just a step up from plain WM's, with a task bar, etc. A step up from that has things like LXDE, LXQT, Mate and XFCE. These are much more in depth DE's, with many features, while still being pretty low end. LXQT is the continuation of LXDE using QT, but both are in use right now, LXQT is still beta but much more feature full, and in my experience easier on resources then Mate or XFCE. However, all of them are low end, and are much better on netbooks then Gnome or KDE.
Once you decide what route you want to take, you install it, xorg, and xorg-xinit. Now open up ~/.xinitrc and add "exec $desktop" to the bottom, where $desktop is command to whatever desktop/window manager you want to use. Now when you start your netbook it will pop up a login screen. Log in, and type "startx" and it will boot your system. You can also take it further then that if you want, having auto login, auto startX, etc, but that is something shall leave to the Arch Wiki to help you
AndroidX86 might be something to look at to. It has gotten really good lately, you can even go RemixOS and have a "desktop" environment.
Ok, now that you have decided what Distro you want, on to how to boot it. Most netbooks do not have optical drives, so we use USB. On Linux you can use dd, BultiBootUSB, or my prefered Multisystem. On windows, while you do have choices, I have had issues with all but Refus, which works great. If you use dd, well, only do it if you know what you are doing :). Every one else is pretty straight forward. Start it, select your USB drive, point at the iso, and start. Then you reboot your system, press whatever key it says to press to see a boot menu (sadly they are not standard), and install.
Now that The install is done, lets move on to hardware upgrades. I know, it isn't something anyone wants to do. In order of what I think is needed most. Ram is first, of course. Most netbooks have 512mb-1gb, while often being able to upgrade to at least 2gb. While usable even on 512mb, upgrading to 2gb helps alot, especially since you can get a 2gb stick for sub $20. If your netbook can 4gb is great, I have never needed more then 4gb for netbooks so that is likely all you would need. If you do do this, you "need" swap, of at least 512mb. However, swaping to your main HD can really thrash your system, so more ram really is best. Next, an SSD is amazing. If you want to give it a big boost, I would really recommend this, I never thought it mattered much till this year I was given a 100gib one. Amazing how much it helps. If you can find one on sale, go for it. It helps big time. Lastly, wifi. Depending on your netbook, it could be stuck at G, even if it has N it might be 2.4ghz only, etc. Plus, getting rid of a broadcom wifi chip would be helpful :). Personally, I nixed getting 5ghz N for a 2.4ghz only one, but with Bluetooth, the Centrino 130. Love it, lets me use my netbook as an AP allowing me to share my network with everybody :).
First up, lets start with Powertop. This is a simple little thing that shows you what is using your power, helping you find things that are killing your battery, and giving you quick toggles to fix alot of the things. Plus, you can run "sudo powertop --auto-tune" and it will automagically set everything to "usable", but low power mode, helping you save power.
Rfkill is also a great too for power save. On the go, and don't need power to your wifi/bluetooth. Kill it. I added this to a powersave script. If I know I am going to be on the net for a bit, run it and it runs powertop, kills wifi, bluetooth, and a few other things. A great little addition.
Cpupower is something that lets you set governors, as well as set the cpu's frequency scaling. This is very helpful, depending on the cpu, for saving battery.
As for browsers, if you stick with 1gb or less, you "can't" use the standard Firefox or Chrome/ium browsers. They really want 2gb or more. While they will run, they eat your ram, causing system thrashing when it runs out as it trys to swap. Thus, if over 1gb use whatever you like, if under, well. First up, Palemoon is pretty good. It is based on Firefox, can use it's addons, but with lower resource use. Then you also have things like Dillo, Midori, Qupzilla, and Surf, as well as many others. Or, if you don't need a pretty GUI, you can go CLI browsers like Links, eLinks, or W3M, and a few more. Pick whatever one you like, that has the speed you want.
On to Video. You have a lot of choices. Though, likely, you can't do HD video, depending on the netbook ofcourse. However, SD video should play just fine in whatever player you want to use. My prefered player is Kodi. Add some plugins and it can turn your netbook into a total media win :). However, I also like Smplayer and VLC. Or, if you want to go CLI only, or just lowend as you can, you can just go stock MPV/mplayer. Just run mplayempv /path/to/video from the cli. Sidenote: If you just "have" to play HD video, some might play if you use mpv. Just run echo "framedrop=yes" >> ~/.mpv/config" first. Or, you know, pick any of the other dozens of players :).
Music, now that is a big thing. There are tons of ways to do this. I prefer cmus. However, this is a CLI player, that many might not like. You can also go with Kodi for this too. However, if you want a normal music player you can go LXMusic or XMMS2. If you want a music library player, you can go with Amarok, Audacious, Banshee, or any of a dozen other ones. :)
Youtube is an issue. You can go for a desktop player, like Kodi with the youtube addon. You could also use SMPLayers SMTube, or Minitube. That is a good way to go. If you want to play in the browsers, I would look at getting a browser to work with Linterna Mágica. It needs userscripts support to work, so not all will, but some can. It's better to use a normal program, but if you just have to.
Linux has a thing about text editors. I am not going to pick sides in this battle, I don't want to die. Surfice to say, there are alot. So I will simply link to the Arch Wiki List of them. You get your choice of GUI or CLI, whatever one you like best should be fine. Text editors are pretty lowend in general, so pick whatever floats your boat.
When it comes to full word processing, that is alot smaller a choice pool. You have things like Calligra, LibreOffice, and even Ted. However, on low end the only ones I can recommend is Abiword. It works great, albeit low on the feature list, it should do for most work.
A few odd/end programs you might like as well. For PDF XPDF is a very low end reader that just does it's job. Not many features, but it works well. If you like comics, mComix is a great CB* reader. MTPaint is a nice MSPaint replacement, if you need it. For general image vieweing, GPicView works well enough, and is pretty low end.
A big problem with netbooks is the screen is to small. The norm seems to be 1024x600, though that does seem to have changed lately. Still, if you are stuck with such a small resolution, it can suck. Most programs expect you to have at least 1024x768. Lucky, X has a way around that ala "stretching". Since this isn't the easiest thing to do for some people, I wrote a little script over here that will increase the size by 25% by default, but can be whatever you want. You may have to change what size to increase it to to suit your screen, every one was different. My D255 screen liked 35% the best.
Also, I had an issue with the mouse being REAL fast using any SDL program that was full screen. If you have that issue to, a simple fix is to add
export SDL_MOUSE_RELATIVE=0to the end of .bashrc.
Now, while this does depend on your system, most can actually do some pretty good games. Here is a really small list of games that should work on "most" netbooks.
FreedroidRPG: A nice easy to understand RPG, staring a penguin. Can use espeak for some voices.
Naev: is a great space trader game. A nice background story, cool graphics, ect. Runs very nice on Aspire Ones
Delver: It might be too much for you, depending on what else is running, but it is a great 3D first person rougelike set in a minecraft type universe. Very nice game, great pick up and go ability.
Halo: Yeap, I was able to get Halo to play on this system with Wine. Runs OK on standard settings. 2 Might work, but I never did try it.
Doom 3: O yeah, this worked. Not well, and it had to be on the lowest setting. The framerate was a bit low, to low for me to stick with it, but it was 'playable'. That being said, I did it when it first came out, and under wine. There is now a linux binary, as well as an open source engine that could have better results.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind: There is now an opensource client, that can run on most sytems. It isn't perfect, but it can run nicely on many lower powered systems, and is just a great game.
Emulators: All emu's up to PSX work fine, as well as some NDS games working. Of course by this I mean that the ones that focus on performance can play fine (like SNES9x, not the ones that focus on accuracy ( like BSNES) as they need a lot more resources to do it then.
TLDR: Use Refus to add Ubuntu Mate to USB then install it. Then add ram to at least 2gb.
If you have any trouble, feel free to drop a line. Always been a netbook fan, so I have lots of experience with them :).
