Genesis and the Serpent in the Garden: The Ultimate Origin of Religion
The idea is that this behavior is indicative of religious belief. There are other potential interpretations of such behavior. Since we can never ask someone from 12,000 years ago about their state of mind, all we have to go by is the archeological evidence.
And what is the proposed religious/metaphysical belief? Usually the putative reason for inclusion of personal possessions is that "they're for the afterlife". But is this the source belief of faith/religion? Or is there another plausible possibility?
Yes there most certainly is. And I don't think this will be a hard sell.
It goes like this.
Ancient people living as hunter gatherers might have lived without much in the way of material belongings. But they did have to use their wits. There were complex environmental relationships to be observed. And there was also the perception of probability.
People living in the past dealt with risks and odds all the time. The article I mentioned early talks about Animism as the earliest form of belief. And I wonder if Animism got it's start as a means of describing the phenomenon of probability. Perhaps even teaching how probability functions. Imo, it would have qualified itself as a form of metaphysical belief as soon as it incorporated belief in the ability to influence probability, especially to make a difference in terms of favorable outcomes.
In English, we just say "good luck" or believing that doing some things (and not doing others) is lucky.
Today, most of us barely pay attention to luck. We think in terms of odds, statistics or even absolute randomness. But in the past, most people took it for granted that luck was a thing that could be influenced.
And that was it, the first religion. People might have carved certain stones a certain way because they felt it was a "lucky" thing to do. Those included burial effects might have been the "good luck charms" of the deceased.
- The buriers might have seen burial as a "lucky" thing to do.
- Including good luck charms in a burial might have been explicitly lucky, or it might have been a way of avoiding bad luck (from keeping someone else's lucky charm... even after death)
It was perhaps, the Serpent in the Garden. How so?
Like I mentioned, probability (risk/benefit, good/bad luck etc.) is something people must be aware of no matter how early the era. It's only a short hop from being aware of probability to thinking about how to influence probability. With the first belief in directed influence, you get the first religious believers.
Over time, primitive societies would have developed complex beliefs regarding the workings of probability and cause-effect relationships. Perhaps the next step was to include allegories, archetypes and other ways of describing how the abstract, probabilistic side of life seems to work. Include a body of knowledge the outlines a set of principles and a small number of rules governing social behavior... and you've got the core elements of every religion.
And I'm not saying there's anything false or inaccurate about such beliefs. There is a subtle force to probability. Do 1 million coin tosses and "Laws" of probability all but guarantee the ratio of heads to tails will be within several decimal places of 50%.
I see probability as a kind of force or a power. The ancients ascribed a personality to it and came to believe in a plethora of supernatural beings... or a single all-powerful God.
Final idea is that Genesis might be a lesson, or warning against fortune telling or fortune seeking activities. How so?
God told Adam and Even to leave the Tree at the center of the Garden alone. Then they heard the Serpent's side of things. Then they made the world's first bet... and they lost.
So Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil = some kind of lore pertaining to luck and various ways to influence it.
Serpent symbolizes the ever present temptation to learn about probability, luck, fortune telling or how to influence the favorability of a particular outcome.
Adam and Eve = Masculine and Feminine Human nature. Essential characteristic of either one is risk taking. Essential result is a consistently negative effect on outcomes.
To take things a little bit further?
Most mainstream religions have a body of knowledge considered to be coming directly from a Divine source. If you consider such knowledge from a probabilistic sense, the laws/values/beliefs that genuinely produce favorable outcomes are considered divine. The ones that do not are perceived as false and "superstition".
Thou shalt not make unto thyself any graven image. Not because making statues or tarot cards is bad, but because they don't work... and often lead people into maladaptive, risk-taking behavior. [a functional, logical explanation for the valid benefit of one of the 10 commandments]
So recap ideas:
- Luck and probability
- Perception of same acts as cause to a number of effects.
- One effect is a progression towards religious beliefs.
- Some cause effect relationships consistently prove out as beneficial, some prove inaccurate or ineffective and are warned against.
