I just wanted to say thank you everybody on this sub for posting stuff and answering questions. I would like to give back to all of you who are taking the MCAT and who have helped me to. For those who did not get the scores they would of liked, Just keep working hard, I was there before, it sucks, but YOU CAN REBOUND AND IMPROVE. This test does not define who you are.
Backstory: I took the MCAT my senior year in May of 2018, I took it rushed as I was attempting to make last years application cycle and I was dumb and did NOT study nearly enough. I ended with a SAD 125/121/127/128(I had a 550 on my SAT reading), I'm English native but just have never been good at standardized reading sections. I decided not to apply for good reasons, continued to work as a ER scribe and enjoyed my time off in the fall just working and learning. My dumbass did not start studying till later January early February. TBH the test totally sneaked up on me. I studied for 2 weeks of content + 9 weeks of practice with a study plan I borrowed from a friend who also used TPR.
Prep Materials: I took a TPR prep course back in the winter of 2018, and got an online extension in January for this years test. The first half of my studying I started studying with CARS sprinkled throughout every couple of days but mainly P/S and B/B. I used TPR science workbook and their online passages and I did 90 % of all their B/B and P/S passages in the first 4-5 weeks of studying with one Princeton test every weekend before I went onto my AAMC practice tests. What I noticed here was that while TPR is great for content, timing, and exposure, HOWEVER, their questions are written to "trick you". AAMC writes questions that may be tricky but are NOT meant to fundamentally trick you(barring my test day reaction below for P/S). At this point as you will see in my scores they were not really improving too much. At this time, I kept seeing people post about UWORLD. UWORLD this. UWORLD etc. I decided to switch to UWORLD for Physics, CARS, and P/S. I did all UWORLD physics in three-four days reviewed and made flash cards. Physics really clicked after this. I then realized that I was at week 7 and at this point I started doing Q-packs and I started doing UWORLD CARS 4 passages every day. I will post scores below. I started taking AAMC tests on Saturdays with test reviews on Sundays. I then did section banks and then eventually the real deal on 4/13. Concurrent with all this I forgot to mention I created a 40+ page doc of every term or anything I did not know. I even used diagrams online from google, anything that would help. At around week four I converted this doc still work in progress into ANKI. THIS TOOK FOREVER obviously...I should of started this earlier. I reviewed ANKI probably every two days in depth and intermittently throughout everyday day, BUT nothing extreme like seriously less then 40 flash cards a night and never fully went over all my cards because I started late. I was too tired at the end of the day and by the time I did 40 flash cards I was falling asleep. MY flashcards were thicc though which I know people say don't do, but honestly this test is about doing you. Study how you know how to study.

At this point I was scared of my CARs and P/S. My final week of studying I did all of UWORLD P/S barring 20 questions with slight anki review and continued my 4 cars passages a day on UWORLD. Note I looked at the first 20 pages of P/S 98 page doc and I know this thread says its useful partly because it is, but for me I did not find it useful. Perhaps the 300 page but I never got to it.
Q-PACK and SB untimed in the sense I would allow myself to grind out the one problem instead of skipping it. But did try to keep a quick pace as though I was taking the test. All done the last two weeks.

Test Day: I overworked myself the last week, and Friday night before my test I got sick. I picked up an insane sinus congestion and pressure and mild sore throat. I did ironically get a good nights sleep however. My screen did freeze on test day just as they signed me in and they had to contact pearson and was put on hold so I did not start my test till 9:00. Which is funny because I took all my practice test under real conditions except I started between 9-10. I studied up to Friday night. I studied how I did for every test. I have always been a crammer, and during the 9 weeks of practice I studied on Fridays too. However, my Fridays I did generally do a lighter more content sort of day. Some people will say take Friday off, but Honestly do YOU. I don't see a problem either way as long as you get a good nights rest.
My Test day reaction from 4/13:
"Okay so here is my comments for today’s test: overall feels really ehh. Excuse my grammar I’m on my home typing. My scores:

C/P: honestly ROUGHLY 40%physics, 40%biochem 15% ochem, 5%chemistry which is ironic because you would figure this section is suppose to be chemistry but oh wells . Overall felt same as FLs 2/3. A couple questions were I WAS so close to answering but couldn’t get it but overall maybe 6-8 I was iffy about. I enjoyed the biochem and the physics COULD have been much worse. Prediction 128-130
CARs: honestly I f*** hate cars, I practice and practice and I have tried different techniques and review techniques but get wrecked. Overall tho 2 pssgs were pretty tough. 4-6 pssgs moderate and 1-2 give me. However what i think I struggled with the most today with this section is like the questions they asked I felt were vague and tons of RBT questions. But I suck so yeah. Prediction 123 if I’m lucky 😢similar ish to q pack 1 but not Picasso like but definitely harder the qpack 2..
B/B: honestly I don’t remember much but a few left field questions and pathway dependent questions straight memorizations. A few AA with indirect ways of asking not seen on Fl. Overall slightly harder then fl didn’t really have time to review but I did finish. Prediction 130-132.
P/S: As others have said just felt dumb...asked low yield psych terms with 2-3 high yield terms. The MOST interesting this was the amount of no content you needed for this section. Felt Cars 2.0 ish. Although Not as bad as “cars”. UWORLD p/s felt very similar EXCEPT their questions were way more straightforward. MCAT was like low yield pssgs with vague questions buried in pssgs PURPOSELY meant to “trick you” in wording. Like the results were never straightforward. 2-3 graphs overall the whole test. Very little experiment analysis I was hoping to knock this section to assist my low cars score but really left feeling confused. Prediction 125-127.
Overall: my score is probably close to fl3 give or take points for cars, and each section."
Month break: It felt good to be done. It was bad the first couple of days and then went away until about a week ago where I really started to have self doubt. Based on the general consensus of the mcat reddit page most thought CARS was not terrible and I was like that section was hell. BTW I had 34 minutes with 5 passages to go on CARS. I figured I would probably need to retake a third time for CARS....Anyways last week was the worse part.
General Tips: I studied 7 days a week with only a couple days in that 9 week period where I relaxed and I enjoyed those days. However even on days I took off I would still think about the test and see this page post so it really motivated me to keep studying. I studied probably from 8-6 early on and then 8-2 with a few hour breaks and finished studying in the evening. I studied at starbucks and took my practice exams at my local library. I worked 16-22 hours a week but on a set schedule mostly in the evenings to early mornings. Towards the last two weeks and last week I felt like I did not know anything but I felt like if you put any passage on any subject(except CARs) in front of me I would be able to answer it. This was a weird feeling, but then again while in college I performed my best on test I felt like I didn't know anything.
Social Activities Side note: I see people post on here occasionally about relationships and MCAT, and I'm no relationship expert, but I'm in a relationship and it is possible. Just communicate and do set aside time to go on dates. I did not go out on dates as much but still found time because that stuff is important. If your significant other likes you they will understand and support you, and that's the bottom line. Just don't be a dick. Just make sure you treat them right when you are done. I neglected working out when I studied which I regret because I normally exercise. Do exercise. Do have fun. Family and friends are key, keep in contact with them. Social support is HUGE.
Final Note: Keep studying hard, regardless of your score on this test you ARE extremely smart, and hardworking individuals...we all are. I tell friends and family all the time, this test is no joke, and any score on this test while not what we want is incredible. My mindset going into my retake was I'm going for the highest score possible. No offense to anybody's goals, but when you set a bar on what you want you only limit yourself. If you have no bars you are limitless. Best of luck.

Create the Best SAT Study Plan for You
Based on the things I have learned being an SAT tutor for 13 years, I will give some tips on creating your own study plan, discuss a study plan template, recommend some materials, and give some general study tips. This won’t be some magical article you can print out and follow robotically. The idea is to give you what you need to make your own study plan. You will also need to revise it. Life will interfere. Some topics will require less time out of you, and some will require more.
First, it is very important to create a study plan instead of just winging it. The students who tend to not want to go through the hassle of creating a study plan are the exact students who need it most! When working with students, I recommend they spend around 10 weeks, getting in around 6 hours a week of work. So let’s use this as our template.
Part one of the study plan is a timed, and if possible, realistically proctored, Official SAT. I usually have students take Official Practice Test 1. Then score the test. This is usually the time when a student doesn’t feel great; they have a score they aren’t proud of and maybe are in a bit of shock. That’s normal.
Now is the time to make a calendar. Be realistic and find chunks of time throughout the week to study. It’s great if those times can be the same every week but sometimes it isn’t feasible. I recommend chunks of time from 45 minutes to 2 hours. More or less than that can have diminishing returns. We can put that in our calendar. Mondays 4:15-5:15, Thursdays and Fridays 3:30-4:15, Saturdays 1-3, and Sundays 1-2:30. We got our 6 hours! Now, don’t worry about making your first schedule perfect. The first draft will have some bad assumptions like when you actually get home from practice, when you will have dinner, etc. You will update the schedule every week, so just make sure it is “good enough”. If you have more time per week, put in more study chunks. Less time? Put in as many study periods as you can.
When you study, prepare ahead of time to make it easy to study. Collect all your materials beforehand. Don’t have any distractions: no tv, phone, or even music.
After getting our blocks of study time set, we want to think about materials. I strongly recommend the Official SAT Study Guide for everyone. It has the best practice questions, and its massive size serves as an excellent defensive weapon if you are ever attacked! There aren’t a lot of Reading materials I love, and I haven’t seen every companies’ offerings, but I can say Erica Meltzer’s book on SAT Reading is good, if too long. I also really like International Tester’s SAT Reading Guides for everybody, but especially for ... international students. She has two ebooks, one on the Literature Passages and one on the Global Conversation Passages. Those ebooks are short, but packed with good info. I am probably gonna do a separate post to review both those ebooks soon. For SAT Writing & Language, I like Erica Meltzer’s books, but have heard good things about College Panda. For Math, I like PWN the SAT and College Panda. If you are scoring around a 550 or below in Math, you will likely have to do some significant work on your math fundamentals. Khan Academy is a good place for that. I have used KA’s online SAT practice, and I can recommend it. I have also heard good things about Magoosh, but don’t have direct experience.
We have our calendar started and got our materials. Now, we get to come back to that practice test you probably wish we had forgotten about. One of the reasons I like PWN the SAT and Erica Meltzer’s books is that they have appendices that allow you to look up every question you missed on SAT Practice Tests 1-8 and figure out what type of question you missed. (PWN the SAT only has tests 1-6 in the book, you need to go to their website to download appenidix for tests 7 and 8). Why is this so useful? You are going to use those appendices and keep a tally of how often you missed every question type. Once you have done that, and arranged the question types in descending order of most missed, you will know what to start with.
Your first day of study after categorizing mistakes will consist of doing the chapters in the workbooks related to your most missed questions. I don’t recommend spending a long study session on just Math or only Reading. You could spend the first half on Reading, and the second on W&L, for example. The early phase of your study will be doing these chapters until you have done several for each section. Once you have completed all the chapters on question types you were consistently missing, you will be ready for the middle phase. The middle phase of your study will be a mixture of chapters and practice tests. The late phase will be mostly practice tests. With our 10 week plan, we would spend about 3 weeks in each phase. If you have less time, make each phase a bit shorter. Extend each phase if you have more time.
When I write doing chapters and practice tests, I’m including your original attempts at answering questions, your review of them, and your 2nd try of those questions. Students tend to underestimate the value of reviewing and retrying, thinking that just mindlessly grinding out a massive quantity of questions is what will help them improve. That doesn’t work well at all. Most of your study time should be understanding and reviewing questions. I would recommend spending half to two-thirds of your study time reviewing. If you only managed to do all the questions on SAT practice tests 1 and 2, but thoroughly reviewed everything you missed and guessed on, you would improve more than if you had done all 8 practice tests and even several of the QAS tests, but half-heartedly reviewed them afterward.
Having nagged you to review, I should at least give you some guidance on how to review. The goal with your review is to know the question well enough that you will get any very similar question correct in the future, and could teach someone else how to get the answer. You should keep a mistake journal that organizes all of your review. Your should try to answer three things in your review of each question: 1) What did I do wrong?, 2) What should I have done instead?, 3) What is the clue in this question that I missed that should have shown me how to answer the question? Sometimes, these three questions may overlap enough that you only need to answer two, and that is okay. Once you start filling up pages, don’t just ignore them. You will want to review these notes. This, right here, is the real bulk of where your improvement comes from. Knowing what your mistake were, and knowing what to do instead can be difficult, especially early on. Getting good explanations is key. Don’t overdo it, but use SAT to ask for help on questions that stump you! The College Board or Khan Academy explanations are okay, but not always helpful. 1600.io has good explanations, and the explanations for tests 1-4 are free. Between all of these resources, you will have explanations for any question you could have.
Once you have reviewed all of your missed/guessed questions, you aren’t off the hook yet. You will need to retry all of those questions, without notes. Wait long enough to make sure you don’t remember that #17 was D, but don’t wait too long. This is where you prove that you understand the problem. Don’t skimp on this.
Realistic Proctored Tests
Good review is the bulk of where your improvement will come from, but you need to make sure all that improvement shows up on test day. The biggest impediment to that is a lack of realistic testing experience. In addition to that diagnostic, you need to take at least 2 more tests under realistic conditions. So, no extra breaks just hanging out at home. There are plenty of local test prep companies that offer free proctored tests. Just make sure that you are taking official SAT tests. If that won’t work for you, take the tests at a library. Bring a pencil and calculator. Turn your phone off. Time yourself accurately. If you can, try to even take them on Saturday mornings. The missed questions from these tests will be the material you will use for review.
The last week of your study should be about consolidating and resting. You can’t effectively learn a bunch of new material in the last week. What you can do is make sure everything you have “mostly” learned becomes stuff that you know completely. Review your notes. Finish up any remaining retries. Get enough sleep. Exercise.
I just threw a bunch of stuff at you. You don’t have to perfectly implement all of it. Just do what you can. If you read it all and implement most of it decently, you will be far ahead of most students and can make very big improvements.
